SPL: MURPHY SLAMS CRISTIANO RONALDO, CALLS SITUATION ‘UNBELIEVABLE’

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has criticized Cristiano Ronaldo for refusing to play for Al-Nassr, accusing the Portuguese superstar of putting personal interests above the club.
Ronaldo did not make himself available for Al-Nassr’s 1-0 victory over rivals Al Riyadh in the Saudi Super League on Monday. The decision comes amid growing tensions between the forward and the club over financial and strategic issues.
Journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on the media, explained that Ronaldo is reportedly unhappy with the special treatment given to Al Hilal by the club’s owners, the Public Investment Fund (PIF). The striker’s protest is believed to be connected to funding disparities, with Al Hilal receiving significantly more money for transfers and operations than Al-Nassr.
Some reports suggest Ronaldo also tried to block former teammate Karim Benzema’s move to Al Hilal, believing it would be better for Saudi football if Benzema joined Al Ittihad or even Al-Nassr. Others argue the issue is broader, relating to central funding distribution rather than Benzema specifically.
Ronaldo is expected to face fines and other disciplinary action for refusing selection.

Murphy, reacting to the situation, was scathing in his criticism. He urged the Al-Nassr captain to put the club first, even suggesting that Ronaldo donate part of his salary to strengthen the squad.
“Perhaps Ronaldo could give some of his earnings to the club so they can hire more players. I have never heard of something so ridiculous in my life; it’s self-indulgent nonsense,” Murphy said.
Despite Ronaldo’s attempt to influence transfers, Benzema successfully joined Al Hilal on an 18-month contract. Ronaldo himself signed a two-year deal with Al-Nassr in 2025, keeping him at the club until 2027 after leaving Manchester United in 2022.
Since Ronaldo’s arrival, Al Hilal and Al Ittihad have claimed the Saudi Pro League titles, while Ronaldo is yet to help Al-Nassr win a major trophy. Reports from Portugal indicate the superstar is reportedly unhappy and may reconsider his future in the club this summer.
