Muslims in Kano on Friday held special prayers in honour of Nigeria’s former Military Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Mohammed, as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

The prayer session, organised by the Murtala Mohammed Foundation, took place at the Murtala Muhammad Mosque in Tudun Maliki quarters of Kano metropolis and attracted Islamic scholars, prominent personalities, and members of the late leader’s family.

General Mohammed ruled Nigeria from July 1975 until his assassination on February 13, 1976.

Leading the prayers, the Chief Imam of the mosque, **Sheikh Kabiru Dan-Taura**, recited verses from the Holy Qur’an and described the late Head of State as a leader whose legacy would endure because of his service to the nation.

According to him, despite his brief tenure, General Mohammed made far-reaching impacts on Nigeria, earning him lasting admiration across the country. He urged leaders at all levels to emulate the former Head of State’s leadership style, stressing that good deeds ensure lasting remembrance and divine reward.

Following the prayers, Sheikh Dan-Taura led dignitaries and family members to the late General’s graveside, where additional prayers were offered for the repose of his soul.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Risqua Mohammed, son of the late Head of State, expressed gratitude to the organisers and participants, noting that five decades after his father’s death, Nigerians still hold him in high esteem.

In separate remarks, cousins of the late General, Ambassador Umar Wali and Ado Kurawa, also appreciated attendees and prayed for Allah’s abundant rewards upon them.

General Murtala Mohammed, Nigeria’s fourth Head of State, was renowned for his bold reforms and anti-corruption stance. His administration implemented sweeping civil service reforms, created new states, relocated the nation’s capital to Abuja, and supported anti-colonial movements in Southern Africa, actions that earned him widespread popularity and international recognition.
