A federal grand jury has charged a 33-year-old Ohio resident, Shannon Mathre, for allegedly threatening to assassinate United States Vice President JD Vance during the vice president’s visit to Ohio in January, the US Department of Justice confirmed on Friday.

In a statement, the Justice Department said Mathre, who resides in Toledo, Ohio, is accused of “making a threat to take the life of, and to inflict bodily harm upon” the vice president.

According to prosecutors, Mathre allegedly stated that he intended to track the vice president’s location and use an M14 automatic rifle to carry out the attack. Authorities did not disclose where or to whom the threat was made.

US Secret Service agents arrested Mathre on Friday following the indictment.

The alleged threat is the latest security incident involving Vice President Vance. In early January, Vance disclosed that an individual had attempted to break into his Ohio residence by repeatedly hammering on the windows. The vice president and his family were not at home at the time, and a 26-year-old suspect was subsequently arrested, according to US media reports.

The Justice Department also revealed that during the investigation into the alleged threat, law enforcement officials discovered multiple digital files containing child sexual abuse material in Mathre’s possession.

Mathre appeared before a US Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Ohio on Friday. He remains in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for February 11.

Federal authorities said investigations into the matter are ongoing.
