Some unidentified gunmen, suspected to be cultists, have killed the President-General of Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Ikwuka Okoye, also known as Anumili.
The attack occurred late on Friday at the School Field, Ogidi, and also claimed the life of another man whose identity is yet to be confirmed. Sources suggest the incident may have been carried out by a rival cult group in retaliation for the arrest and death of their leader by local security operatives.
Eyewitnesses described the attack as shocking, with residents expressing outrage over the killings. One source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Daredevil gunmen invaded our community last night. By the time they were done, the town’s President-General, Sir Ikwuka Okoye, and another victim, who happened to be his relative, lay dead on the floor.”
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident in a press statement on Saturday. Spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the attack is allegedly linked to the recent capture and killing of a notorious cultist in the community.
Ikenga stated, “The Anambra State Police Command regrets the murder of the President-General of the Ogidi community and one other person. Following the report, police operatives swiftly took over the scene and commenced investigations. The command is currently working with eyewitness accounts and other available intelligence to identify and arrest the perpetrators.”
He assured the public that efforts are being intensified to bring the culprits to justice, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as investigations continue.
Further updates are expected as police continue their probe.
