Rayo Vallecano’s La Liga home match against Real Oviedo on Saturday was postponed just hours before kick-off due to unsafe playing conditions at Vallecas Stadium, a day after players protested against the club’s owner.

La Liga confirmed that the match, originally scheduled for 13:00 GMT, was suspended “with the aim of safeguarding the physical integrity of the players.” The league added that the pitch “does not meet the necessary guarantees for holding the match under safe conditions.”

The Spanish top-flight body noted that Rayo had made “significant efforts” to prepare the field, including a complete replacement of the turf, but adverse weather hampered the work.

The postponement comes after Rayo players, supported by the coaching staff, issued a statement via the Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) on Friday, calling for improved working conditions and criticizing the state of the stadium, pitch, and training facilities.

“The state of the grass at Vallecas Stadium has been clearly deficient over the last month,” the players said, noting that it does not meet “minimum requirements to play a top-level match.” They also cited difficulties training at the club’s facilities during pre-season and called for better treatment of fans.

Rayo president and owner Raúl Martín Presa, a controversial figure with a history of disputes with supporters, has faced criticism for his management style. Presa has expressed plans to relocate the club from Vallecas, which has fueled fan protests.

The rescheduled date for the match has yet to be announced. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between Rayo Vallecano’s players, management, and supporters over conditions at the historic but deteriorating stadium.
