Spanish giants Barcelona have formally withdrawn from the European Super League project, leaving Real Madrid as the only club still involved, the Catalan club announced on Saturday.

“Barcelona announces that today it has formally notified the European Super League project and the clubs that have been part of it, of its withdrawal,” the club said in a statement.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta, speaking in October 2025, emphasized the club’s desire to reestablish ties with UEFA, moving away from the controversial project originally launched by 12 clubs in 2021. The Super League collapsed shortly after its announcement due to widespread fan backlash and institutional pressure.

The withdrawal marks another step in Barcelona’s effort to mend relationships with European football authorities and refocus on domestic and continental competitions under UEFA governance.
