Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday visited Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, following a deadly attack that claimed 75 lives, according to state authorities.

The visit, directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was aimed at assessing the situation firsthand and conveying federal condolences to the grieving families, Shettima’s media aide, Stany Nkwocha, said.

Shettima was received upon arrival by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other state officials. The governor earlier described the victims as local Muslims “massacred for refusing to submit to extremists preaching a strange doctrine.” Initial reports had suggested over 100 fatalities.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, reportedly followed a rejected attempt by militants to forcibly indoctrinate members of the community.

Nkwocha added that the vice president conveyed President Tinubu’s assurances that the Federal Government would ensure justice for the victims. “VP Shettima is conveying President Tinubu’s strong assurances that the Federal Government will not relent until those responsible are tracked, apprehended, and brought to justice,” he said.

President Tinubu had earlier condemned the attacks on Woro and Nuku communities as “cowardly and beastly,” and confirmed that military operations were underway to apprehend the perpetrators. An Army battalion under Operation Savannah Shield has been deployed to protect defenceless communities and checkmate the attackers.

The President also urged closer collaboration between federal and state agencies to provide relief to the victims and ensure the assailants face justice.
