The Ogun State Police Command has clarified reports surrounding a viral TikTok video alleging a violent sexual assault in the state, stressing that the victim was not arrested when she came forward to report the incident.
The controversy began after a TikTok user, Mirabel (@mirab351), posted an emotional video on Sunday claiming she had been sexually assaulted in her apartment.
In the widely circulated clip, shared across platforms including X (formerly Twitter), she alleged that an unidentified man broke into her home while she was unconscious, physically assaulted and raped her. She further claimed that the attacker later sent her threatening messages and that she attempted suicide due to the trauma.
The video sparked widespread outrage online, with many users demanding swift justice.
Initial reports suggested the incident occurred in Lagos State, prompting responses from the Lagos State Police and related agencies. However, preliminary findings indicated that the alleged assault took place in Ogijo, Ogun State, placing the matter under the jurisdiction of the Ogun State Police Command.
Subsequently, social media claims emerged alleging that Mirabel had been arrested, with some users speculating that inconsistencies in her account led to police action.
The police have since debunked the claims.
In a statement posted on X on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Mirabel voluntarily presented herself at the Ibafo Police Division on Wednesday, February 18, to file a formal complaint.
According to him, after preliminary evaluation, she was transferred to the Ogijo Division, which has jurisdiction over the area where the alleged incident occurred. Officers reportedly found that she was not in a stable condition to provide detailed information at the time.
“She was immediately taken for a comprehensive medical check-up, and her health is being closely monitored, as her wellbeing remains paramount. At no time was the victim arrested,” the statement read.
The command emphasised that the case is being handled professionally and urged members of the public to rely on verified information from official sources.
“The Police are handling the matter professionally and urge the public to verify information through official channels before dissemination,” Babaseyi added.
