The Kebbi State Police Command has stepped up security in the Bui District of Arewa Local Government Area following a deadly armed cattle rustling attack that claimed 33 lives.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said additional personnel and operational resources had been deployed to the affected communities in coordination with the military and other security agencies.

Usman added that continuous area domination patrols are ongoing to stabilise the district and prevent further incidents of violence.

“The Command deeply regrets the loss of thirty-three innocent lives and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the entire Arewa community,” the statement read.

The police reported that preliminary investigations indicate suspected Lakurawa militants entered Bui District on February 18 to carry out cattle rustling.

Authorities believe the attackers crossed into the area from Gudu Local Government Area.

Residents of Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago reportedly mobilised in response to the attack, resulting in a deadly confrontation.

The police have stressed that incidents involving heavily armed criminals require coordinated security responses and warned residents against confronting such groups directly.

“Members of the public are urged to report suspicious movements promptly through official security channels rather than engage armed criminals, as such actions carry serious risks,” said SP Bashir Usman.

Earlier reports had indicated that at least 34 people were feared dead after gunmen launched coordinated daylight attacks across several communities in Arewa Local Government Area, sparking widespread panic throughout the Kebbi North Senatorial District.

Security forces have since launched targeted operations to track and apprehend the attackers, block potential escape routes, and strengthen early warning systems.

The Command called on residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to restore lasting peace in the affected communities.
