ANAMBRA SHUTS NASPA MARKET OVER MONDAY SIT-AT-HOME NON-COMPLIANCE

The Anambra State Government has announced the closure of the New Auto Spare Parts Association (NASPA) Market in Nkwo Nnewi for one week over alleged low compliance with the state’s directive ending Monday sit-at-home.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, the government said the market would be shut from midnight on Monday, February 23, 2026, and reopen on Monday, March 2, 2026.
The government explained that the decision followed poor adherence to Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s order banning the Monday sit-at-home in the state.
According to the statement, the closure directive was conveyed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, alongside the Commissioner for Information, the Special Adviser on Security, AVM Ben Chiobi (Rtd), and the Mayor of Nnewi, Echezona Anazodo.
Traders and customers were advised to stay away from the market until its scheduled reopening to avoid clashes with law enforcement agents. The government warned that the market could face further closure if substantial compliance is not recorded upon reopening.
The state noted that normal activities have resumed across Anambra on Mondays since the governor’s renewed enforcement measures in January 2026.
Earlier in January, Soludo ordered the temporary shutdown of the Onitsha Main Market and adjoining markets to enforce compliance, warning that his administration would not tolerate what he described as economic sabotage.
Parts of Anambra and other South-East states have for years observed Monday sit-at-home directives imposed by non-state actors, disrupting commercial and social activities. In April 2022, Soludo formally declared the sit-at-home over, announced amnesty for youths in hideouts, and initiated a peace and reconciliation process.
