A 43-year-old man has been arrested in Sepeteri, Oyo State, for allegedly killing his elder brother with a heavy rock after claiming the deceased shot him in a dream.
The suspect, Lateef Suleiman of Alegunlode Compound, Sepeteri, reportedly woke up convinced that his 52-year-old brother, Mustapha Amidu, had attacked him in his sleep.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer of the state, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the police said that instead of dismissing the dream, Suleiman allegedly picked up a heavy rock and struck his brother on the head before fleeing.
The statement read, “One Badmus Yunisa ‘m’ of Alegunlode Compound, Sepeteri, reported that Lateef Suleiman ‘m’, aged 43 years, attacked his elder brother, Mustapha Amidu ‘m’, aged 52 years, following an accusation that the deceased had shot him in a dream while he was asleep the previous night.
“Acting on this claim, the suspect allegedly approached the deceased where he was seated, picked up a heavy rock, struck him on the head, and fled the scene immediately.”
Mustapha was rushed to Ileri Oluwa Hospital in Sepeteri but later died from his injuries.
According to the command, he was “confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty.”
Police operatives from the Ago-Amodu Divisional Headquarters promptly visited both the crime scene and the hospital, describing their actions as “preliminary investigative procedures.”
Suleiman was later tracked down and arrested. The command said he has confessed and “is currently cooperating with investigators.”
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Femi Haruna, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further probe.
The command stated that it would conduct a “discreet and comprehensive investigation,” assuring the public that “justice will be pursued diligently and in accordance with the law.”
