PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: OBI SAYS APC’S GOVERNORS POSE NO THREAT

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said he is not intimidated by the increasing number of governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress, maintaining that he will still contest the 2027 presidential election despite the party controlling 30 governors.
Obi said he would not be discouraged by what he described as conspiracies from different quarters aimed at preventing him from participating in the race.
The former Anambra State governor stated this on Friday in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, during an empowerment programme organised by the member representing Dunukofia/Njikoka/Anaocha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, George Ozodinobi.
Addressing the gathering, Obi explained his recent political move, saying, “You all know that I am now in the African Democratic Congress. Many people have asked why I left the Labour Party. I told them that we had been in court over leadership issues within the Labour Party and had been securing favourable judgments, yet INEC refused to recognise us. However, when I left on December 31, 2025, the same orders they had earlier ignored were suddenly recognised.”
Obi further alleged that recent attempts to amend certain provisions of the Constitution were aimed at preventing him from contesting the election.
“You can see the various adjustments being made to the Constitution. Some of them are targeted at stopping me from contesting. But I want to tell them that even with their 30 governors, they should simply ensure that the election is free and fair and then see who emerges victorious,” he said.
He insisted that he would remain in the race regardless of any political manoeuvres.
“I want to make it clear to everyone that no matter what they do, I will contest the election. Let them organise a free and fair contest, place the ball at the centre of the field, signal the start of the game, and then we will see how it unfolds,” Obi added.
He lamented the state of the country, saying the nation’s system had collapsed.
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, said Nigeria has completely collapsed and requires urgent efforts to restore it, stressing that his ambition is not driven by desperation to become president but by a desire to see a functional nation.
Obi said the country was no longer working, blaming the situation partly on what he described as the greed of many wealthy Nigerians who, despite having enough, continue to seek more at the expense of others.
Speaking at an empowerment programme, he noted that even affluent individuals often scramble for items meant for those in need, adding that many of them already possess better assets than what is being distributed.
According to him, the system in Nigeria is heavily tilted against the poor, which is why he is determined to pursue the presidency in order to build a country where people can succeed based on merit rather than connections.
He expressed appreciation to the lawmaker for providing empowerment items to constituents, noting that such initiatives highlight the importance of electing responsible and people-oriented leaders into public office.
