The Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria (GAFDAN) has accused military personnel of shooting and killing nine cows owned by Fulani herdsmen in an alleged unprovoked attack in Tangoron community, Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State.
According to a statement posted on GAFDAN’s Facebook page, the incident occurred on March 2, 2026, while herdsmen were grazing their cattle. The attack reportedly resulted in the deaths and injuries of several cows.
The statement, titled “Unprovoked Attack on Grazing Herders and Their Livestock by Military Officers,” said:
“On the evening of March 2, 2026, military personnel allegedly shot nine grazing cattle in Tangoron, Bassa Local Government Area. The soldiers reportedly moved from Maiyanga before the attack.

“Community sources confirmed there was no provocation, farm damage, or prior confrontation. Two cattle died instantly, two were later slaughtered due to injuries, and five remain seriously wounded.
“We call for an immediate and transparent investigation, accountability where necessary, and compensation for affected livestock owners. For centuries, livestock keeping has been our primary source of livelihood.”
However, Captain Chinonso Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), told the media on Tuesday that he was unaware of such an incident.
“I can categorically say that no such incident has occurred, as there have been no recent confrontations with Fulani herders in any Plateau community. In fact, we are just coming from Barkin Ladi, and I can confirm that nothing like this took place. Nonetheless, we will investigate the matter,” Oteh said.
