UCL PREVIEW: CHELSEA, MAN CITY AIM FOR ‘REMONTADA’ AGAINST PSG, REAL MADRID

By: Balogun Ibrahim
In the UEFA Champions League round of 16, Chelsea FC and Manchester City FC are aiming for dramatic comebacks—known in football as a remontada—against Paris Saint-Germain FC and Real Madrid CF, respectively.
Both English sides face daunting first-leg deficits, putting them in must-win situations to advance to the quarter-finals. Chelsea host PSG after a 5-2 defeat at the Parc des Princes last week, while Manchester City welcome Real Madrid to the Etihad Stadium following a 3-0 loss at the Bernabéu, which saw Federico Valverde score a first-half hat-trick.
Managers of both clubs have urged their squads to stay focused and resilient ahead of the crucial second legs.
The term remontada, widely used in European football, refers to a comeback from a significant first-leg deficit, demanding tactical brilliance, mental strength, and attacking firepower.
Interestingly, both Chelsea FC and Manchester City FC have struggled to regain form in domestic competitions following their Champions League setbacks.
Chelsea suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Newcastle United, while Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by a struggling West Ham United.
Qualification Scenarios
Chelsea:
The Blues must secure a 4-0 victory to advance outright, overturning the aggregate score to 6-5.
A 3-0 win for Chelsea would level the aggregate score at 5-5, sending the match into extra time and possibly penalties.
Manchester City:
The Citizens must win by four unanswered goals to advance outright. A 3-0 victory would tie the aggregate at 3-3, also taking the tie to extra time or penalties.
Both teams will need to “put on their scoring boots tonight,” aiming to maximize goals while keeping clean sheets to boost their chances of progression.
Other Fixtures
Sporting CP vs Bodø/Glimt: Sporting faces a 3-0 first-leg deficit and must win by the same margin to force extra time, or by a greater margin to advance outright.
Arsenal vs Bayern Leverkusen: Arsenal can book their place in the next round with a victory at the Emirates Stadium.
