Manchester United’s push for a Champions League place suffered a setback after they surrendered the lead twice in a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Friday.

Manager Michael Carrick has now lost just once in his last 10 matches in charge, but his side were forced to settle for a point after a late red card for Harry Maguire left them under pressure.

The contest was shaped by a series of penalty incidents. Bruno Fernandes put United ahead early in the second half from the spot. However, Bournemouth responded almost immediately, with Ryan Christie equalising shortly after United were denied another penalty claim.

United regained the advantage when James Hill inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. But the game swung again when Maguire was sent off for bringing down Evanilson inside the box. Junior Kroupi converted the resulting penalty to earn a draw for the hosts.

Despite the dropped points, United remain third in the Premier League, maintaining a seven-point gap over sixth-placed Chelsea as they continue their bid for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification.

After a goalless first half, the match came alive with four goals in a frantic 20-minute spell. United had earlier created the better chances, but Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic denied both Fernandes and Amad Diallo with key saves.

Fernandes opened the scoring after Matheus Cunha was fouled by Alex Jimenez. United then appealed for another penalty when Diallo went down under pressure from Adrien Truffert, but the referee waved play on, allowing Bournemouth to break and equalise through Christie.

United quickly restored their lead through Hill’s own goal, but Bournemouth remained dangerous. Alex Scott struck the crossbar before the hosts eventually levelled from the penalty spot.

Maguire’s dismissal, which came on the same day he earned a recall to the England squad, proved decisive as Bournemouth pushed forward in the closing stages.

The result extends Bournemouth’s unbeaten league run to 11 matches, although a streak of five consecutive draws leaves them 10th and hampers their hopes of securing European football next season.
