An Ogun State Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta, on Monday ordered the remand of Abass Olalekan at the Oba Correctional Centre for 60 days over his alleged role in an unlawful abortion that reportedly led to the death of 23-year-old corps member Victoria Ariyo, pending advice from the state Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

Magistrate O.T. Odubanjo issued the remand order following an ex parte motion filed by the police prosecuting counsel, Solomon Babalola, on the amended charges against Olalekan.

The NYSC official is accused of being responsible for Ariyo’s pregnancy, which was allegedly terminated unlawfully, resulting in her death.

Olalekan had been arrested and arraigned last Monday before Magistrate A.K. Araba on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to procure an abortion. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of N500,000 with other conditions.

The case took a new turn on Monday following Abass Olalekan’s re-arraignment on amended charges, now including murder.

Olalekan is set to face trial on a four-count charge, covering conspiracy, supplying drugs for an unlawful abortion, and murder.

According to the charge sheet, “That you, Abass Olalekan ‘M’, and others at large, between January and March 2026, at Ikereku area, Laderin, Abeokuta, in the Abeokuta Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit a felony, to wit: abortion, and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.”

The amended charge sheet against Abass Olalekan alleges that he and others now at large:

  • On the same date, time, and location, unlawfully attempted to procure an abortion by supplying drugs to Ariyo Victoria Olapeju, an act punishable under Section 230 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
  • Between January and March 2026, conspired to commit murder at Ikereku area, Laderin, Abeokuta, in violation of Section 324 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
  • Between January and March 2026, unlawfully caused the death of Ariyo Victoria Olapeju, aged 23, by providing her drugs for abortion, contrary to Section 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

The police prosecuting counsel, Solomon Babalola, requested that Olalekan be remanded for 60 days at the Oba Correctional Centre, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Magistrate O.T. Odubanjo approved the request and ordered that the defendant remain in custody at the Oba Correctional Centre until legal guidance is received from the State DPP.

The case has been adjourned to June 1 for continuation.
