The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of a 24-year-old man, Iziga Jude Ikechukwu, for abusing the Nigerian currency during his birthday celebration in Enugu State.
Justice F. O. Giwa-Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court sitting in Independence Layout, Enugu, sentenced Ikechukwu, also known as “Easy-money,” to one year imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of mutilating Naira notes.
According to the EFCC, the convict was arraigned by its Enugu Zonal Directorate on March 26, 2026, for trampling on N81,700 during his birthday celebration at a hotel in Enugu-Ezike.
The charge stated that Ikechukwu, on February 22, 2026, danced on and matched the sum issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, an act deemed an offence under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007.
Following his guilty plea, the court sentenced him to one year imprisonment with an option of a ₦300,000 fine. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the N81,700 recovered from him to the Federal Government.
The EFCC disclosed that Ikechukwu was arrested on February 28, 2026, at his residence near Timber Market in Enugu-Ezike after a viral video surfaced showing him abusing Naira notes during the celebration.
The anti-graft agency reiterated its stance against the abuse of the national currency, warning that offenders would continue to face prosecution in accordance with the law.
