Troops of the Nigerian Army have successfully rescued 31 civilians abducted during an Easter church service in Ariko Village, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The operation followed a distress call reporting that terrorists had attacked an ECWA Church in the community, abducting worshippers during the service.
In a statement posted on its X handle on Sunday, the Army said its personnel quickly mobilised to the scene and, with guidance and support from local residents, pursued the fleeing attackers. A fierce firefight ensued, with the troops overpowering the terrorists using superior firepower.
“The advancing troops forced the terrorists to abandon 31 hostages, including one injured victim who is receiving medical attention,” the statement partly read.
However, the Army also confirmed that the remains of five victims, killed by the attackers, were recovered at the scene. Blood trails suggested that the fleeing terrorists sustained significant casualties during the confrontation.
Troops have intensified operations to track down the fleeing terrorists, rescue any remaining captives, and bring the perpetrators to justice. Additional forces have been deployed to reinforce security, prevent further attacks, and safeguard lives and property.
“The Nigerian Army reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting citizens and defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity, in collaboration with other security agencies and local stakeholders. Troops remain resolute in sustaining offensive operations against all threats to national security,” the statement added.
The Army urged the public to continue supporting security efforts by providing timely and credible information, emphasizing that collective vigilance is key to achieving lasting peace and stability.
