Former Club Brugge and Anderlecht forward Marc Degryse has cautioned manager Ivan Leko over his recent remarks aimed at players returning from international duty, warning that such comments could strain relationships with national team coaches, including Eric Chelle.

The criticism followed Brugge’s 4–2 victory over Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League play-offs, where Leko expressed frustration after his side nearly squandered a three-goal lead.

Although Leko did not directly name individuals, reports indicated his comments were directed at Filip Stanković, Raphael Onyedika, and Joel Ordóñez—all of whom had just returned from international assignments with Serbia, Nigeria, and Ecuador respectively.

Reacting in Belgian media, Degryse described Leko’s remarks as unwise, noting that public criticism of players over international commitments could create tension with national team setups.

“You don’t make any friends with this,” Degryse said, adding that national team coaches and sporting directors are seasoned professionals who may not appreciate such statements.

He specifically referenced figures like Rudi Garcia and Vincent Mannaert, suggesting they—and other national team officials—would likely take note of Leko’s comments.

Degryse warned that such remarks, even if indirect, could have wider implications for club-country relations, especially when players are balancing commitments between domestic competitions and international duties.
