There was a strong security presence at the Federal High Court in Kaduna on Tuesday as former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, arrived for the ruling on his bail application.

Presided over by Justice Rilwan Aikawa, the court had restricted access to its premises, with security personnel positioned at key points to ensure order and control movement.

Our correspondent noted that the former governor arrived under tight security, while journalists and members of the public were kept at a distance.

The court had scheduled Tuesday for the ruling on El-Rufai’s bail application concerning the fresh charges against him.

Earlier, El-Rufai first appeared before the Kaduna State High Court at about 9:00 a.m.

However, the proceedings did not go as planned, as the presiding judge, Darius Khobo, adjourned the bail ruling to April 21.

The development came after new legal action by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, which submitted an amended nine-count charge against the former governor.

Speaking with journalists after Monday’s proceedings, counsel to the former governor, Ukpong Abang, said the prosecution had amended the charges, removing one of the initial defendants and making El-Rufai the sole accused.

He explained that the defence was surprised by the development, noting that the charges were only served on them in court that morning, which prevented the matter from proceeding.

Abang further stated that the defence team would need time to examine the amended charges before determining their next steps, adding that they would respond after a full review.

He also noted that the court initially adjourned the matter to Tuesday, April 14, for ruling on the bail application, but it was later further adjourned to April 21.
