POLICE DISMANTLE ARMED ROBBERY GANG IN AKWA IBOM, RECOVER FIREARMS

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command says it has dismantled a notorious armed robbery gang allegedly terrorising the Midim community in Abak Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Thursday.

According to her, police operatives, acting on credible intelligence in the early hours of Thursday, raided the gang’s hideout, arresting one suspect while two others escaped into a nearby bush.

She added that efforts are ongoing to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Items recovered from the arrested suspect included a locally made pistol, a small axe, a knife, charms suspected to be used for criminal protection, and six wraps of substance believed to be Indian hemp.

Other recovered items were two button phones, three bottles of ice, three rings, one Airtel SIM card, and a multi-coloured handbag.

The statement explained that the operation followed intelligence reports about a gang allegedly targeting motorcycle operators at gunpoint within Midim clan and surrounding communities.

It added that police operatives swiftly launched a coordinated raid on the hideout, leading to the arrest of one suspect identified as Uduak Vincent, 28, from Ikot Ifang Village in Midim clan, Abak LGA.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the command’s resolve to rid the state of criminal elements and warned violent offenders to abandon crime or face decisive police action.
