Ayra Starr has said that Nigeria’s unstable electricity supply had a negative impact on her upbringing and early development.

Speaking at the Global Citizen NOW event in New York, she explained that her life and opportunities might have been very different if she had access to consistent power while growing up.

She noted that the poor electricity situation affected her education, her career development, and even her family’s livelihood.

Recalling her childhood experience, she said her grandmother used to sell tomatoes and pepper, and she often helped out, but they had to sell quickly because there was no electricity for storage.

According to her, those difficult conditions shaped her resilience and problem-solving skills. She added that growing up with reliable electricity would have made everyday life and schoolwork much easier, especially in extreme heat.

Ayra Starr also called on African leaders to address electricity challenges across the continent, stressing that every child deserves access to stable power and basic amenities needed for proper development.
