UPDATE: KEKE RIDERS PROTEST OVER ALLEGED EXTORTION BY YOBE STATE TRANSPORT AGENCY

Alleging unlawful and unprecedented extortion of their members in the guise of levies by Yobe State Road Transport Agency (YOROTA), hundreds of Tricycle Riders (Keke) organised a nonviolent demonstration in the streets of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.
The protests, which began early on Tuesday, disrupted commercial operations and traffic patterns throughout the city and its surroundings for several hours.
Governor Mai Mala Buni, who appears to be concerned about the protests, has issued a warning, stating that the state administration will not tolerate any actions that could jeopardise public order.
The governor issued the order on Tuesday and stated that the administration will never jeopardise the safety and security of its inhabitants in a press release that was signed by Mohammed Mamman, his spokesperson.
He said government shall stand firm against anything and anyone that disrupts the relative peace and harmony enjoyed across the state.
“We have had very bitter experience of breach of peace for quite a long time in the state. We can not afford to have any more.
“We are recovering from a protracted security challenge. We must avoid any issue capable of threatening our hard earned peace, ” Governor Buni advised.
He charged members of organizations, and associations to always channel their grievances through constituted authorities and must not in any way take the laws into their hands.
In addition, Buni warned parents and guardians to caution their children about the risks of inciting discontent and upsetting the peace, stating that the government would deal with those who posed a threat to it.
In order to achieve this, the governor has given the Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Baba Malam Wali, security agency heads, Yobe State Road Transport Agency (YOROTA), and the Tricycle (Keke Napep) Commercial Operators Association leadership instructions to develop a clear and unambiguous set of additional measures that ensure citizens’ security and to enhance the tricycle operators’ operations throughout the state.
He said the measures should resolve all areas of differences between Keke Napep operators, YOROTA, and security agencies to improve safety, and harmony among road users and the regulators.
