Buhari reportedly appoints Amaechi as 2019 Campaign Director
President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi as his 2019 reelection campaign director-general, ThisDay reports.
Amaechi, who was Buhari’s campaign director in 2015, has reportedly been issued a letter of appointment christening him the campaign director for Buhari’s reelection bid.
While the president has refused to make known his position for the 2019 elections, he has according to ThisDay informed Amaechi, and a group known as the “Buharists,” of his intention to run.
The Buharists group was reportedly formed by Amaechi during the height of growing criticism against the president, in order to turn around the narrative around the president, and includes governors, ministers, and chieftains with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
ThisDay reports that Amaechi is expected to make public his appointment soon, and has begun to consult with critical party members and stakeholders for the president’s reelection in 2019.
A source who spoke to ThisDay said APC National Leader Bola Tinubu told those who approached him regarding the reelection of the president that although the South-West’s backing of Buhari in 2015 was based on trust, the conditions for 2019 would involve proper negotiations.
He is reported to have said: “Let it be known that we supported him in 2015 based on trust. This time, around, we have to negotiate proper agreement.”
