A 19-year-old young man named Oluwaferanmi Olasupo drowned while swimming with his friends in a disused quarry pool near Eseke Village in the Odeda Local Government Area of Ogun State.

CSP Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun Police Command, announced this during a statement on Saturday in Abeokuta.

According to Odutola, the victim’s grandfather, Sunday Olaseinde, reported the incident at the Divisional Police station at around 6:39 p.m. on Friday.

She stated that once the report was received, law enforcement officers and a surveillance team quickly rushed to the scene to attempt a rescue.

However, she explained that because of poor visibility at night, the rescue efforts were delayed, and local divers were subsequently contacted to help recover the body.

“The Divisional Police Officer has launched an investigation and search operation following the tragic drowning of 19-year-old Oluwaferanmi Olasupo.

“According to report, the victim, an inexperienced swimmer, had gone to the quarry site with friends to swim when he drowned.

“His grandfather reported the incident to the police at about 6:39 p.m after being informed by villagers.

“Meanwhile, the victim’s friends, who were present at the scene, fled and are currently in hiding,” she said.

She mentioned that the parents of the victim’s friends, who fled the scene, had been requested to bring their children in for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

Odutola stressed that this incident highlighted the risks associated with swimming in unsecured water bodies, especially in abandoned quarry sites.

She also urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid such dangerous areas.
