By Aishat Momoh. O.
At least seven people lost their lives while sixteen others sustained various degrees of injuries in a tragic truck accident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday at the Essa community along the Agaie-Badeggi Road in Katcha Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
He said the ill-fated truck was transporting grains allocated by the Federal Government. It was also carrying 36 male passengers, all reportedly en route to Kano from Lagos.
The accident, which took place around 3:00 a.m., was attributed to the deplorable condition of certain portions of the Lambata-Bida road, particularly those yet to be reconstructed. The poor road condition is believed to have contributed significantly to the mishap.
Emergency responders, including officials from NSEMA, nearby commuters, and local villagers, were involved in the rescue operations at the scene. Baba-Arah confirmed that seven individuals were confirmed dead at the time of filing the report.
Of the survivors, eleven suffered serious injuries, while five sustained minor injuries. Some of the injured victims were taken to health facilities in Badeggi and Agaie for medical attention, while others were reportedly assisted by their fellow travellers. The bodies of most of the deceased were also claimed by their relatives shortly after the incident.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency has urged road users, especially commercial transporters, to exercise caution when traveling through hazardous road sections, particularly during night hours.
Efforts to reconstruct and rehabilitate critical parts of the Lambata-Bida road continue, with authorities calling for expedited action to prevent further tragedies.
