FRESH BANDITS ATTACK IN PLATEAU AS THREE FAMILY MEMBERS MURDERED IN MIANGO DISTRICT
By Aishat Momoh. O.
Tragedy struck once again in Miango District of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State on Tuesday as three members of a family were brutally murdered while harvesting crops on their farmland. Two others sustained severe machete wounds and are currently receiving treatment in Jos, the state capital.
Community sources confirmed that the gruesome attack occurred even as a government-appointed fact-finding committee on persistent violence in the area was holding peace talks with local stakeholders and security agencies at the Bassa council secretariat.
Chairman of the committee, Major General Nicholas Rogers (retd.), a former Commander of Operation Safe Haven, expressed shock and heartbreak over the killings, describing the incident as “deeply saddening.” He appealed to Irigwe youths and community members not to retaliate, assuring that the government is committed to finding a sustainable solution to the unending violence.
The victims of the Miango attack have since been buried, while security forces have reportedly launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
The latest assault came less than a week after a wave of coordinated attacks left 13 people—mostly children and the elderly—dead in Juwan and Manja communities within Bokkos and Mangu local government areas, respectively.
In Juwan, Tangur District of Bokkos LGA, 10 people were slaughtered by suspected herdsmen while tending their farmland. Several others sustained injuries before security personnel responded to distress calls and repelled the assailants.
In Manja, located in the Chafem Chiefdom of Mangu LGA, three people were killed in a similar farm ambush. The attackers also set over 20 houses ablaze before being repelled by security operatives assisted by local youths.
Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Council, Amalau Samuel, confirmed the killings and described the incident as “barbaric and inhuman.”
Mathew Kwarpo, the lawmaker representing Mangu South in the Plateau State House of Assembly, also condemned the violence. He said that although security forces and community youths were able to repel the initial attack in Manja, the attackers returned later to wreak further havoc, burning down homes.
The repeated attacks have heightened fears and tension in the affected communities, even as calls for urgent and decisive government intervention grow louder.
