The Adamawa State Police Command has dismantled a notorious criminal syndicate allegedly responsible for the theft and illegal sale of tricycles and motorcycles in Yola metropolis.
Spokesperson for the command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the breakthrough followed an intelligence-led operation by operatives of the State Intelligence Department, resulting in the arrest of key suspects and the recovery of two stolen tricycles and a dismantled motorcycle.
Nguroje revealed that 25-year-old Mohammed Alhaji, from Hulere Ward in Yola North Local Government Area, was the first suspect arrested. During interrogation, Alhaji confessed to being a member of a syndicate that specialises in stealing tricycles and motorcycles.
He also implicated 19-year-old Jafar Babangida, a fellow resident of Hulere Ward, as the individual responsible for stealing two TVS tricycles from different locations in Yola.
The stolen vehicles were reportedly sold to 38-year-old Ziyau Garba of Sangere and 37-year-old Bawuro Ibrahim of Vinikilang, who in turn sold one of the tricycles to another suspect, 35-year-old Sahabi Mohammed, also from Vinikilang in Girei Local Government Area.
In a related development, Babangida was found to have stolen a Jincheng motorcycle on a separate occasion. He dismantled the vehicle and conspired with a 15-year-old accomplice, Lukman Usman, to sell the parts to 30-year-old Auwal Musa of Nyakore Ward, Yola North LGA.
“All suspects have been arrested and have voluntarily confessed to their involvement in the organised crimes,” the statement read.
Nguroje added that investigations are ongoing to trace additional stolen property and apprehend other syndicate members still at large.
The police assured residents of continued efforts to combat criminal activities and ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.
