The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following a surge in security threats that reportedly claimed lives within the campus community.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, confirmed that Governor Umaru Bago approved the shutdown in response to the deteriorating security situation in and around the university. The closure takes immediate effect and will remain in place until further notice.
“The safety and security of all citizens, particularly students and staff, is of utmost priority to the Niger State Government,” the statement read. “We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate events, and immediate action is being taken to address the situation.”
The government urged students, staff, and members of the university community to remain calm and cooperate fully with security agencies. It added that investigations are underway and those responsible for the violence will be prosecuted.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to upholding law and order and to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents in Niger State,” the statement concluded.
Efforts are ongoing to restore peace and normalcy to the area.
