Israeli authorities have arrested a 22-year-old student on suspicion of espionage and carrying out security-related tasks on behalf of Iranian agents.

In a joint statement released Thursday, the Shin Bet domestic security agency and Israeli police said the suspect—an information systems student at Ben Gurion University in Beersheba—was arrested in June. He hails from the Arab village of Deir al-Asad in northern Israel.

According to the statement, the student had been in contact with an Iranian intelligence operative for several months and allegedly received payment to carry out various activities, including an attempted physical attack, scattering nails on a major road in Beersheba, and inciting divisive public discourse.

Authorities believe the suspect was motivated by solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. They noted that he will soon be formally charged with committing security offences.

It remains unclear whether the arrest occurred before or during Israel’s recent 12-day military confrontation with Iran.

The case adds to a growing list of alleged Iranian espionage operations in Israel, as tensions continue to simmer between the two regional adversaries.
