The Lagos State Government has impounded more than 10 articulated trucks for flouting access restrictions on the Third Mainland Bridge, as part of renewed efforts to enforce traffic laws and protect vital infrastructure.

The enforcement operation, which began over the weekend, was carried out by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) after months of stakeholder sensitisation and public advisories.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, quoted the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, as saying that the crackdown reflects the government’s commitment to public safety and compliance with traffic regulations.

Giwa said, “The Third Mainland Bridge is categorically excluded from the list of permissible routes for some articulated vehicles. This restriction is clearly enshrined in the law, and non-compliance will be met with decisive sanctions.”

He explained that only vehicles below nine tonnes are allowed on the bridge, especially after recent major rehabilitation works.

The state government has also deployed advanced surveillance systems to ensure efficient monitoring and enforcement.

“These technologically advanced monitoring tools are a key part of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s strategy to promote road safety, prevent structural fatigue, and encourage responsible driving on high-risk routes like the Third Mainland Bridge,” Giwa added.

He emphasised that the restriction on heavy-duty vehicles during peak hours across selected bridges remains in force, adding that the enforcement is not punitive but necessary to safeguard public infrastructure and improve traffic flow.

Giwa warned logistics companies and truck operators to comply or face immediate impoundment and sanctions.

“The period of indulgence is over. Ample sensitisation has been undertaken, and the regulatory position is unambiguous. Any truck operator found flouting the prohibition will have their vehicle impounded immediately, and appropriate sanctions will be enforced,” he said.
