The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced a new date Saturday, August 30, 2025 for the conduct of the state’s local government elections, shifting the exercise from the earlier scheduled date of August 9.

RSIEC Chairman, Michael Odey, made the announcement on Monday during a stakeholder meeting held at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, where the revised electoral timetable and guidelines were officially unveiled.

Odey explained that the postponement was necessitated by the state of emergency declared in Rivers, which disrupted the initial electoral schedule. He said the adjustment was crucial to accommodate the new political realities and ensure a credible, inclusive, and secure electoral process.

According to the revised timetable, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between July 31 and August 3, and submit the names of their candidates on August 3 and 4. Campaigns will officially begin on Tuesday, August 12.

RSIEC also announced that recruitment of ad-hoc staff will take place on Saturday, August 16, while the final list of candidates will be displayed on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

The meeting had in attendance leaders of political parties, electoral observers, media representatives, and other stakeholders, who reviewed and endorsed the updated election roadmap.
