The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has suspended two pilots of domestic airline ValueJet following a serious violation of aviation safety protocols at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, the NCAA said the disciplinary action was taken after receiving reports that the pilots commenced departure procedures from the designated bay without obtaining the mandatory pre-departure clearance.

“This reckless action endangered the safety of ground personnel and other airport users, contravening established civil aviation regulations and international safety standards,” the statement noted.
The regulatory body described the incident as grave and said it acted swiftly in response. “Consequently, the Authority has taken immediate enforcement action by suspending the licences of the pilot, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba, with immediate effect,” the NCAA announced.
The suspension, according to the NCAA, will remain in place pending the outcome of a thorough investigation into the incident.
Reiterating its commitment to safety, the NCAA urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and compliant. “The Authority hereby reaffirms all stakeholders of its commitment to safety,” Achimugu concluded.
