The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially received a newly appointed National Commissioner, Rear Admiral Jamila Abubakar Sadiq Manafa (rtd.), following her swearing-in by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, described the appointment as timely and strategic, coming at a crucial point in the Commission’s electoral preparations.

He noted that the appointment restores full representation for the North-East geopolitical zone after more than a year of vacancy, strengthening INEC’s decision-making capacity as it steps up preparations for upcoming electoral activities.

Prof. Amupitan also highlighted the Commissioner’s broad experience in legal practice, military service, and logistics management, stating that her expertise would contribute significantly to electoral planning, security coordination, and dispute management processes.

Reaffirming INEC’s commitment to its constitutional mandate, the Chairman stressed that the Commission remains focused despite emerging challenges, with ongoing preparations for a series of elections, including by-elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.

He explained that these off-cycle elections would serve as key benchmarks for assessing and enhancing operational readiness ahead of the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 2027, as well as the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections in February 2027.

Prof. Amupitan further urged the new National Commissioner to actively engage in the Commission’s work, collaborate with fellow commissioners, and leverage INEC’s institutional experience to support the conduct of credible, transparent, and inclusive elections.
