The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old woman, Mrs. Sanmori Taiwo, and her 62-year-old husband, Pastor Sanmori Joshua, for allegedly staging her abduction in a bid to extort N10 million from relatives living abroad.

Police spokesperson DSP Olushola Ayanlade, who disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, said the incident occurred on August 23 at the couple’s residence on Road 5, PowerLine, Ondo City.

According to him, Mrs. Taiwo hid herself in a room while her husband contacted her relatives, claiming she had been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

However, suspicion arose when one of the relatives, Mr. Fasegha O. Joseph, petitioned the Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Lawal, prompting the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad (SAKS), backed by operatives of Enu-owa Division, to storm the couple’s residence, where the woman was eventually found.

“She falsely claimed to have just been released by kidnappers after a ransom of five million naira was allegedly paid,” Ayanlade said.

Upon interrogation, Mrs. Taiwo confessed to orchestrating the fake abduction to raise money to settle debts and meet personal needs. The police confirmed that both she and her husband remain in custody and will face charges after investigations are concluded.

“The Command will diligently unravel all forms of criminality, whether real or staged, in order to preserve peace, protect lives, and safeguard the integrity of communities within the state,” the PPRO added.
