The Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun Corps, on Tuesday paraded 28 suspected criminals arrested across the 18 local government areas of the state.

The Commander of the Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the agency’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital. He said the suspects were apprehended in joint operations involving Amotekun, other security agencies, and local vigilantes.

Adeleye explained that the suspects were linked to crimes including kidnapping, theft, cattle rustling, burglary, rape, assault, and vandalism.

“Today, I am parading a total of 28 suspects. The criminal world is evolving, so Amotekun must always strive to be ahead of them,” he said.

The Amotekun boss stressed that the agency is now targeting not only criminals but also their backers and sponsors, insisting that the chain of criminality must be broken to ensure peace and security in the state.

“Until we uproot their godfathers and backbones, we won’t have total peace. Our fight is not against the criminals alone, but against their sponsors,” he said.

Among those paraded were four suspected kidnappers arrested in the Elegbeka area, identified as Kwangi, Kwanji, Kana, Sam, and Daniel, aged between 18 and 27. Others included Abiola, 24, arrested for alleged rape and fraud; Ogungbemi, accused of defilement and sexual assault; and Tosin, who was nabbed for assault.

Adeleye further revealed that cattle rustlers, identified as Abubakar Musa and Umar Mohammed, both aged 20, were apprehended after allegedly stealing cows in Igbara Oke. The stolen cattle were recovered and returned to their owners.

He also noted that Amotekun’s operations have significantly boosted the state’s economy, claiming that Ondo’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) rose by over 500 per cent in 2023 due to improved security.

Commending other security agencies for their collaboration, Adeleye said Amotekun has “dominated the forests,” making them unsafe for criminals.

“The security architecture of Ondo State is firm, and the best criminals can do is to run away from this state,” he declared.

In July, the corps arrested seven suspects for kidnapping and theft of electronics, while items worth N300 million have been recovered in recent operations.
