ONDO 2024: PDP’S AJAYI DROPS SUPREME COURT CASE AGAINST AIYEDATIWA

BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate for the November 2024 election in Ondo State, Chief Agboola Ajayi, has officially retracted his appeal currently pending before the Supreme Court contesting the triumph of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ajayi, a former Deputy Governor of the state, stated that his decision was made after extensive consultations with family members, political affiliates, and legal counsel.
In a correspondence addressed to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Ajayi elaborated that although he acknowledged the existing appeal, further pursuing it would not contribute to the greater goal of peace and effective governance.
He emphasized that the unity and advancement of Ondo State remained his foremost concern, irrespective of political disparities.
“After thorough consideration, we have achieved a consensus that the appeal should be withdrawn. My primary dedication is to effective governance and harmonious coexistence in Ondo State and throughout Nigeria. In this regard, I extend my sincere wishes to His Excellency Lucky Aiyedatiwa as he leads our state,” Ajayi remarked.
His decision concludes months of legal disputes and alters the landscape of the state’s opposition politics.
Meanwhile, the APC in Ondo has welcomed this development, characterizing Aiyedatiwa’s victory as a validation of the people’s mandate.
In a statement issued by the state Publicity Secretary, Alex Kalejaye, on behalf of the Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, the party congratulated Aiyedatiwa, his deputy, Dr. Olaide Adelami, and the citizens of the state.
Adetimehin also praised the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security forces, as well as the PDP, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and the Allied People’s Movement (APM), whose candidates have all withdrawn their petitions. He urged the opposition parties to move beyond the election and collaborate with Aiyedatiwa’s administration to restore the state and enhance its economy.
