President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Sunday, October 12, for Rome, Italy, to participate in the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Level Meeting, focusing on the growing security crisis in West Africa.

This was disclosed in a statement on Saturday, signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy.

Scheduled to begin on October 14, the meeting will bring together Heads of State and Government, senior intelligence and military officials from African countries, and representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations to discuss evolving security challenges across the region.

Launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan, the Aqaba Process is a counter-terrorism initiative co-chaired by Jordan and the Italian Government.

It aims to address threats including the expansion of terrorist networks, the crime-terror nexus, land-based terrorism in the Sahel, and maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.

Participants will exchange assessments of the current security landscape and explore strategies to strengthen regional and international collaboration in combating terrorism.

Discussions will also cover countering online radicalisation and disrupting digital networks used for terrorist propaganda and recruitment.

In addition to attending plenary sessions, President Tinubu will hold bilateral talks with other leaders to explore solutions to rising security challenges in West Africa.

He will be accompanied by key officials, including the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

The statement added that “President Tinubu’s participation in the Aqaba Process Meeting underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional security and proactive engagement in international efforts to combat terrorism and maintain stability across West Africa.”
