TRUMP: FG SAYS DIPLOMATIC ENGAGEMENTS WITH U.S. YIELDING RESULTS
The Federal Government has said its ongoing diplomatic engagements with the United States are producing positive outcomes and helping to strengthen bilateral relations under the Donald Trump administration.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated this while featuring on the UK-based programme The World With Yalda Hakim, where he noted that communication channels between both countries remain open and constructive.
According to Idris, much of the tension between Nigeria and the U.S. stemmed from a lack of understanding of the country’s internal complexities and diverse challenges. He said recent dialogues had helped clarify Nigeria’s position on key issues, especially security and human rights.
The minister also disclosed that intelligence reports had linked certain U.S.-based lobby groups to a proscribed separatist organisation in Nigeria. These groups, he alleged, had been spreading misleading information to American policymakers about Nigeria’s domestic situation.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to its long-standing partnership with the United States in combating terrorism and promoting peace, urging both nations to strengthen collaboration against emerging security threats.
Meanwhile, U.S. Congressman Bill Huizenga expressed dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s response to attacks on Christians and called for economic sanctions rather than military measures. He cautioned that without stronger government protection for civilians, the country risked a repeat of past humanitarian crises.
Back home, several groups, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, urged calm and dialogue rather than confrontation in response to comments made by the Trump administration.
The Chairman of Northern CAN said the current diplomatic situation should serve as an opportunity for reflection and policy improvement.
Similarly, the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere advised the Federal Government to adopt smarter strategies rather than a purely military approach in addressing terrorism and insecurity.
The government’s latest remarks suggest an effort to ease tensions and strengthen communication with the U.S., while also reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to transparency, peacebuilding, and international cooperation.
