The Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out the second phase of its ‘Ounje Eko’ Farmers’ Subsidy Programme before the end of November 2025, to boost agricultural productivity and ensure food security across the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing at Alausa, Ikeja, noting that the initiative remains a key intervention of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration aimed at empowering farmers and stabilising food prices, particularly during the festive season.

Olusanya said the first phase of the programme, launched earlier this year, recorded remarkable success, benefiting over 5,000 farmers across the state.

“Through the first phase, we distributed 993.3 metric tons of poultry feed and 265.65 metric tons of fish feed, which helped sustain 258,000-layer birds, resulting in the production of over seven million eggs and 177,100 catfish,” the commissioner stated.

She added that the intervention contributed to a drop in egg prices from ₦6,000 per crate to between ₦5,000 and ₦5,400, demonstrating the programme’s direct impact on market stability.

Building on that success, Olusanya announced that Governor Sanwo-Olu had approved the implementation of Phase II, which will expand the programme’s reach and support more farmers across multiple value chains.

According to her, the second phase will include:

25% subsidy on poultry feed (layer mash, broiler starter, and finisher)

25% subsidy on fish feed

Free distribution of grains to pig farmers to support livestock nutrition

Provision of agricultural equipment and inputs to crop farming clusters to promote mechanisation and reduce manual labour

She noted that the Phase II rollout would take place across 10 locations in the state, including:
Farm Service Centre, Agege; Agricultural Training Institute, Araga; Epe Coconut House, Mowo; Badagry Fish Farm Estate; Odongunyan and Erikorodo Poultry Estates, Ikorodu; Aiyedoto Poultry Estate, Ojo; Ministry of Agriculture Cooperative Office, Ajah; and the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre.

Olusanya stressed that, as with the first phase, participation would be restricted to recognised and registered farmer associations such as the Poultry Association of Nigeria (Lagos Chapter), Lagos State Catfish Allied Farmers Association of Nigeria (LASCAFAN), and other registered farm estate and settlement associations to ensure transparency and accountability.

She urged farmers who are yet to register to join their respective associations to benefit from the upcoming subsidy scheme, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector as a driver of food security and economic growth.
