The Enugu State Police Command has restated its ban on the sale and unauthorised use of fireworks across the state during the festive season, warning that violators will be arrested and prosecuted.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, reiterated the directive in a statement issued late Monday through the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe. He said the enforcement of the ban was critical to safeguarding lives and maintaining public order.

“We are reiterating that the sale, purchase, and use of fireworks, commonly known as knockouts or bangers, remain banned across the state,” Giwa said, adding that offenders would face the full weight of the law.

The police boss explained that the measure was necessary to prevent criminals from exploiting the loud explosions from fireworks to disguise criminal activities or create panic among residents.

He also urged parents and guardians to caution their children against the use of fireworks, noting that enforcement teams have been deployed to ensure strict compliance throughout the yuletide.

In a related development, the commissioner condemned the rising incidence of bush burning during the harmattan season, describing the practice as dangerous and environmentally harmful.

“Bush burning at this time of the year is reckless and poses serious risks of fire outbreaks that can endanger lives and destroy property. Offenders will be duly prosecuted,” he warned.

The police command appealed to residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security personnel, and promptly report suspicious persons or activities.

Members of the public were advised to contact the Enugu Police Command through the emergency lines: 08032003702, 08086671202, the Command-and-Control Centre on 112, 09134666668, or 09134448093.
