Real Madrid moved provisionally to the top of La Liga on Saturday with a 4-1 demolition of Real Sociedad, thanks in large part to Vinicius Junior, who won and converted two penalties.

The Brazilian winger was the star of the show, nutmegging defenders and calmly slotting two spot-kicks past goalkeeper Alex Remiro. Young striker Gonzalo Garcia and Fede Valverde also found the net for Los Blancos under coach Alvaro Arbeloa.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold made his first start in over two months after a thigh injury, delivering a decisive cross for Garcia’s opener. Real Sociedad briefly equalised through Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty, awarded after Dean Huijsen fouled Yangel Herrera, but Vinicius quickly restored Madrid’s lead with his first penalty before Valverde curled home a stunning third.

Early in the second half, Vinicius earned another spot-kick after being tripped by Jon Aramburu, converting it to complete his brace. The Brazilian was denied a hat-trick due to a tight offside call from a linesman on a subsequent goal.

Real Sociedad’s late efforts, including Orri Oskarsson’s strike, were ruled out for offside, leaving them unable to mount a comeback.

The win moves Madrid two points clear of champions Barcelona, who face Girona on Monday, while Real Sociedad suffer their first defeat under American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo.

Elsewhere, Villarreal lost 2-1 to Getafe, with Mauro Arambarri scoring from the penalty spot and Martin Satriano adding a second, leaving Real Betis with an opportunity to close the gap in the top-five race.

Real Madrid now prepare for a crucial Champions League play-off against Benfica on Tuesday in Lisbon, buoyed by the performance of Vinicius and an emerging midfield showing from Valverde.
