The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 10 suspects over alleged involvement in vandalism of critical national infrastructure, kidnapping, cattle rustling and related crimes in the Federal Capital Territory and adjoining states.
The arrests followed an intensified joint operation by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad and the CG Crack Squad.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NSCDC spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, said six suspects were apprehended for criminal conspiracy, vandalism of electrical power and communications installations, and theft.
He identified them as Suleiman Ibrahim, 31, from Dalla, Kano State; Libras Umar, 25, from Zaria; Umar Rabiu, 18; Muktar Yusuf, 22; Ibrahim Haruna, 18; and Ezekiel, 27. Items recovered included vandalised armoured cables, a heavy-duty hacksaw, pulling ropes and water pipes.
Afolabi added that four other suspects were arrested in connection with kidnapping and cattle rustling activities in parts of Nasarawa and Kaduna states. Some of the suspects were apprehended inside manholes around Begar Roundabout in Abuja, while others were intercepted with dangerous weapons.
During one confrontation, a suspect was neutralised after reportedly engaging operatives in a gun duel.
The Corps said preliminary investigations indicate the suspects have made confessional statements and will be charged to court.
The NSCDC noted that the operation forms part of renewed intelligence-driven efforts to curb infrastructure vandalism and rising kidnapping incidents in the FCT and surrounding states.
