The Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Binta Adamu Bello, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into allegations of child molestation and abuse at a yet-to-be-identified daycare centre in Lagos.

The development follows renewed controversy surrounding resurfaced social media posts allegedly linked to Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the agency disclosed that Bello directed its operatives to immediately begin a probe after “suggestive online posts” pointed to possible abuse within a daycare facility.

The statement noted that while appreciating the concern expressed by Nigerians, the agency’s communication platforms remain open to receive complaints from anyone who may have experienced abuse or violations at the facility in question.

NAPTIP stressed that child protection remains a top priority and encouraged individuals with relevant information to come forward through its official reporting channels.

The agency’s action comes shortly after a similar step by the Lagos State Government. The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, disclosed during an interview on Channels Television that the case had been referred to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary investigation, noting that the agency could not overlook the allegations.

The investigations were triggered by renewed social media activity after screenshots of tweets from 2012 and 2013, allegedly authored by Simi, resurfaced online.

The controversy intensified after the singer publicly advocated stricter punishment for rapists and stated that “almost every woman she knows has been sexually assaulted.” Critics subsequently circulated the old posts, interpreting some of them as suggestive of inappropriate conduct in a daycare setting.

Simi has since responded to the backlash, insisting that the resurfaced comments were taken out of context and were unrelated to any form of misconduct.
