The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has authorized a new retirement benefit plan that will provide retiring federal civil servants with a gratuity equal to 100% of their total annual salary.

The decision, effective January 1, 2026, was announced on Thursday in a statement by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation in Abuja.

The statement noted that the approval came after thorough deliberations and technical input from an inter-ministerial technical committee established by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

The committee collaborated with the National Pension Commission, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to create what it termed a sustainable implementation framework.

Didi Esther Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, praised the council for endorsing the initiative, describing it as a significant move toward enhancing the welfare of federal civil servants.

She stated that the decision reflects President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s recognition of the dedication and sacrifices of public servants.

“This approval is a significant acknowledgment of the invaluable contributions of our civil servants, who have committed their productive years to public service and national development,” she added.

“The exit benefit scheme greatly improves the retirement package for our officers and reinforces confidence in the federal government’s dedication to their welfare,” she said.

Walson-Jack further noted that the initiative is in line with ongoing reforms designed to create a more motivated and performance-oriented civil service, adding that detailed implementation guidelines will be provided in due course.
