The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Dickson Agbor, the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, over allegations of domestic assault.
The suspension followed a motion presented by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo during Thursday’s plenary session.
Etta condemned the alleged violent behaviour, describing it as “unbecoming of a lawmaker” and inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of members of the legislative arm. He stressed that decisive action was necessary to protect the integrity and reputation of the Assembly.
“We must ensure that members conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities entrusted to us by the people,” Etta stated.
After deliberations, the House resolved to place Agbor on indefinite suspension from all legislative activities pending further investigation into the allegation. An ad hoc committee was also established to probe the matter and report its findings to the Assembly for further action.
Following the resolution, Agbor was escorted from the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms in line with the Assembly’s directive.
Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to discipline, dignity, and the integrity of the legislature. He noted that lawmakers must uphold the trust placed in them by the public.
“The House will not tolerate any form of misconduct capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute. Maintaining the dignity of this institution remains paramount,” Ayambem said.
The suspension will remain in effect until the investigative committee completes its review of the allegations.
