The Lagos State Government has launched a full-scale investigation into the collapse of a four-storey building on Adu Street in the Aguda area of Ogba, Lagos, on Monday. The building housed a private school alongside residential occupants.

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday by its Director of Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, noting that there were no fatalities, as students, staff, and residents had evacuated the building before it gave way.

“The building, which accommodated both residential occupants and a private school, collapsed on Monday, raising concern within the neighbourhood. Thankfully, no casualties were reported as all occupants had exited the premises prior to the collapse,” the statement read.

The structure housed Yemco Daycare Nursery, Primary, and Comprehensive College. Some students were reportedly hospitalized for minor injuries sustained during the evacuation.

According to residents, the building collapsed around 11 a.m., shortly after a nearby fashion designer noticed a crack in the wall and immediately alerted school authorities and neighbours. Teachers quickly evacuated the students, and the building caved in within minutes of their exit.

LASBCA officials, alongside the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and other emergency responders, rushed to the scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety. Nearby buildings within the same premises were evacuated and sealed pending structural safety assessments.

“As a precaution, occupants of surrounding buildings were advised to vacate temporarily while safety inspections are conducted to determine the condition and stability of neighboring structures,” the agency stated.

Preliminary findings suggest that some construction or renovation work had been ongoing at the property prior to the collapse, a claim confirmed by residents who noted renovation activity on the ground floor. LASBCA has said a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The agency also reminded property owners and developers of the importance of complying with regulatory procedures during construction or renovation projects to prevent similar tragedies.
