The Delta State Police Command has intensified intelligence-led operations targeting drug dens, blackspots, and criminal hideouts across the State, in a renewed effort to dismantle drug networks, prevent avoidable deaths, and curb crimes linked to substance abuse, including cultism and violence.
The heightened action comes in response to recurring drug-related incidents in various parts of the State, many involving young people. In a recent case reported at Orogun Division, a 15-year-old boy, Gift Oberhirhi, allegedly ingested fifteen Dexamethasone tablets provided by his friend, 15-year-old Destiny Akpofure, without a doctor’s prescription. The boy fell seriously ill and subsequently died while being taken for medical attention.
Police operatives promptly responded, visited the scene, and evacuated the deceased to the General Hospital Mortuary, Orogun, for autopsy. The suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody, with a thorough investigation underway.
The Command noted that the incident highlights the severe public safety risks posed by the illegal distribution and misuse of hard and controlled drugs, particularly among vulnerable groups. It also underscores the urgency of ongoing enforcement operations targeting the unlawful sale and distribution of narcotics.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, PSC, ACIPM, MNIPS, reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring the public that all necessary measures will be taken to address drug-related crimes across the State.
Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and report any drug sales, usage, or suspicious activities to the nearest police station for prompt action.
