Former Abia State governor and serving senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has rejected claims alleging interference by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the country’s electoral process, describing the accusations as baseless.
Speaking on Monday, April 21, 2026, during a media chat in Abuja, Kalu stated that there is no credible evidence to support suggestions that INEC is being manipulated or influenced by external forces.
He said, “INEC is carrying out its duties within the confines of the law. People should refrain from making unfounded allegations of interference without any proof.”
The lawmaker representing Abia North Senatorial District emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy can only flourish when institutions are allowed to operate independently, free from undue political pressure and speculation that breeds public distrust.
Kalu also called on political actors and stakeholders to focus on improving the electoral system through constructive engagement, rather than promoting narratives that could erode public confidence.
He added, “If there are concerns, they should be addressed through appropriate legal and institutional channels, not through unverified public claims.”
