The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman over the killing of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision follows the findings of the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), which investigated the incident alongside other internal disciplinary processes.
Speaking at an emergency press briefing in Abuja, the IGP confirmed that the officer and members of his team have been recommended for dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.
The disciplinary panel concluded that the officer “acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other extant regulations governing the use of firearms.”
It further recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable in the incident.

According to the IGP, once dismissed, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution on charges of unlawful homicide.
He added that the Police Service Commission will review and ratify the recommendations in line with due process.
Reiterating the Force’s stance, the IGP stressed a zero-tolerance policy for extrajudicial killings and abuse of power, stating that no officer is above the law.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this principle will face full disciplinary and legal consequences,” he said.
Disu also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, expressing sympathy over the loss and assuring that justice would be pursued.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Force to ensure accountability and restore public confidence through transparent disciplinary action.
The IGP urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while assuring that the Force remains committed to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
The incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, involved operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun, acting on intelligence that Ogidi had been arrested while allegedly attempting to transport a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
